The Review:

There recently seem to be a huge trend of retro throwback, and over all silly films in Bollywood. Movies like ROWDY RATHORE, THE DIRTY PICTURE and the upcoming ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAI 2, are all stylistic films of an era gone by, made similar to the styles of the same eras. However, the 1st one of those films was a pretty awesome action / comedy in the form of DABANGG.

DA BANG is right! but that’s not how it’s pronounced… i was making a joke.

Salman Khan has always kicked ass in the Indian Film Industry. Known more for his commercially pleasing movies, than his critically acclaimed roles, DABANGG is no exception.

DABANGG is a simple story of a small town police officer, who clashes with big time political bad guys, all due to his own principles of right and wrong, which are skewed at best… and also due to his massive balls. A fact proven by his manly thin Moustache. Also note, the film isn’t pronounced “DA-BANG”. It’s more ‘The-Bung’…, which translates into something like brave, courageous, or like I mentioned… ballsy.

taking the law into his own hands… cuz he can!

Salman Khan plays Chulbul Pandey, a stepson with a half brother who needs to overcompensate for the attention he never received as a child. He does so by being an awesome cop, who is badass and not afraid of doing morally questionable things as long as it benefits the greater good. Imagine an Indian Robin Hood if you will.

DABANGG plays out like the typical Salman film as well. There’s action, jokes, silliness, ridiculous song and dance numbers, a hot girl… the whole nine yards. And it all works.

he’s a good runner… intense!

The plot of DABANGG is a play on the old school dramas like ZANJEER or other ‘cop takes on system’ stories in Bollywood, which were all the rage in the 70’s & 80’s. However, it puts an awesome and comedic spin on the concept and updates it for modern times. Salman Khan is a funnier ‘Angry Young Man’, and it works very well.

it’s his love goggles…

Like I always point out about movies like DABANGG, it’s an entertainer, not a legendary film by any means. Salman’s performance is his typical silly comedy with an awesome supporting cast featuring Sonu Sood, Mahesh Manjrekar, Anupam Kher and more familiar faces than I can count. Not to mention the debut of Shaturgan Sinha’s daughter, current Bollywood favorite, Sonakshi Sinha. For her debut movie, Sonakshi makes an impact, and it’s not hard to see why she’s Bollywood’s new darling these days.

she’s a cutey… but hopefully she does some serious roles soon and not just filler crap

DABANGG is a great family entertainer, that has everything one would expect from a commercially mainstream Bollywood action  / comedy, while providing an enjoyable story which doesn’t annoy or irritate… too much.
